Archilochus Soricidae = hummingbird shrew, pronounced (Latin)- Ar-killo-kuss Sore-is-i-day
Fastest of the flying shrews that winter in South America but, summer as far north as parts of Northeast Ohio by Lake Erie. This particular sub species mimic male ruby throated hummingbirds with appearance and calls, easily mistaken for ruby throats when sipping nectar from blossoms and quenching their thirst at sugar water feeders. They don't have the best eyesight, like other shrews, but their hearing & sense of smell is exceptional and they can feel slight movements from prey and their kin with sensitive long whiskers on their snouts. Their favorite prey are large flying insects like moths and beetles & like hummingbirds, this species enjoys sweet nectar.
